Bangladesh’s BGMEA and BKMEA have jointly urged for exemption of import taxes on all types of fibers used in the spinning and textile mills in the next budget. They have also demanded a reduction in duty of spare parts imports to 1 per cent. The trade bodies say, this will help the industry increase production of non-cotton garment products to meet global challenges and tackle the pandemic crisis.

Currently, cotton imports attract zero duties while non-cotton fibers have to pay15 per cent duty on imports even though they pay 1 per cent duty on imported capital equipment and have to pay 28 per cent to 104 per cent tax on the import of spare parts.
