The European apparel sector is facing mounting pressure to shrink development timelines while adhering to strict environmental mandates. Addressing these operational friction points, Japanese flat-knitting pioneer Shima Seiki is spearheading an industry-wide transition toward virtual prototyping. Through its upcoming Milan exhibition, titled ‘Archivi Punti Aperti’, the firm is demonstrating how software environments like APEXFiz and cloud-based yarn repositories allow designers to evaluate fabric drape, texture, and structural integrity digitally before committing to physical material processing.

Traditional sample creation has long been a major bottleneck and a source of excessive material waste in garment manufacturing, notes Marco Bellini, Head-Technical Operations,  Shima Seiki Italia. By moving the initial evaluation phase into a high-fidelity digital realm, brands can slash physical prototype creation cycles by up to seventy percent, effectively eliminating redundant material usage and accelerating go-to-market strategies, he adds.

Global material synergies and supply chain efficiency

The two-week showcase bridges raw material manufacturing with high-end fashion design by featuring curated inputs from prominent European spinners such as E Miroglio, Filatura Tollegno 1900, and New Mill alongside global counterparts. By synchronizing physical yarn samples with accurate digital twin data housed on the yarnbank platform, participating developers can seamlessly translate raw specifications into executable machine code. This direct integration minimizes sampling iterations from an average of five rounds down to just one or two, safeguarding margins and preventing excess inventory accumulation across downstream retail networks.

Operational footprint and core portfolio

Shima Seiki manufactures computerized flat knitting machines, design systems, and CAD/CAM solutions for the global textile and apparel industries. Its core product categories encompass Wholegarment seamless knitting technology, advanced design software suites, and digital material database services.

The company targets accelerated global expansion through software-as-a-service subscription models and hardware automation. Financially, Shima Seiki maintains a stable performance trajectory, anchored by robust demand for digital transformation tools that lower production overheads and promote sustainable manufacturing practices across international apparel hubs.
