Global textile machinery manufacturers are accelerating investments in high-capacity Asian markets to capture supply chain efficiencies, counterbalancing sluggish equipment spending across European domestic hubs. Data from the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT) reveals, international orders rose 8 per cent Y-o-Y in Q3, 2026, boosting overall sector order intake by 7 per cent despite a 4 per cent contraction in Italian domestic purchases. Asian mills now absorb over 40 per cent of Italian machinery exports, led by India, where capital spending expanded 28 per cent to €176 million.

A structural shift within global apparel production

The divergence underscores a broader structural shift within global apparel production. While European producers contend with elevated energy overheads and broader industrial uncertainty, primary exporters across Asia and South America are upgrading automated spinning, weaving, and finishing lines to lower per-unit operating expenses. Global mills maintain an average production backlog of 3.5 months with factory capacity utilization hovering near 72.4 per cent.

Overseas markets continue to offer positive signals for equipment suppliers navigating structural cost pressures. Industrial buyers are prioritizing energy-efficient machinery to maintain export margins ahead of tightening global sustainability benchmarks, says Marco Salvadè, President, ACIMIT

Managing margin volatility and capital investment cycles

Despite gains in overseas order intake, machinery builders maintain a guarded outlook for late 2026. Total order intake declined by 4 per cent Q-o-Q, highlighting an uneven capital investment cycle. To stimulate domestic re-equipment, European manufacturers are looking toward national fiscal incentives, such as Italy’s Transition 5.0 scheme, to catalyze long-term capital expenditure across automated fabric finishing and circular yarn processing.

Focusing on sustainable technology solutions

Founded in 1945, ACIMIT represents approximately 300 Italian manufacturers of spinning, weaving, knitting, and finishing machinery. Generating €1.94 billion in annual output, the sector exports 86 per cent of total production across 130 countries. The organization focuses on sustainable technology solutions and automated production equipment tailored for high-volume apparel manufacturing hubs worldwide.
