China’s pet economy is evolving from novelty consumption to a performance-driven apparel market. Valued at RMB 3.5 billion (approximately US$ 500 million) in 2024, the pet clothing sector is maintaining a robust annual growth rate of over 20 per cent. This expansion is increasingly fueled by the ‘humanization’ of pets among Gen Z and Millennial demographics, who now command the majority of market spending. Unlike previous cycles focused on purely aesthetic designs, the 2026 landscape prioritizes ‘material intelligence,’ with functional garments - including those featuring odor control, UV protection, and thermal regulation - now accounting for more than 60 per cent of total domestic sales.
Intertextile’s strategic ‘Pet Boutique’ launch
To address this burgeoning demand, the Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Spring Edition 2026 will debut the Pet Boutique. Opening March 11–13, 2026 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, this dedicated zone will feature over 3,000 global exhibitors across 190,000 square meters. Positioned strategically adjacent to an expanded Functional Lab - which has grown 30 per cent in scale this year - the Boutique will showcase advanced textiles from industry leaders such as Lenzing and 3M. The focus remains on circularity and technical performance, utilizing recycled polyester and bio-based fibers to meet the stringent sustainability requirements of eco-conscious ‘pet parents.’
Supply chain agility and future outlook
The integration of the Pet Boutique alongside the Econogy Hub reflects a broader industry shift toward traceable, high-performance materials. As China’s total pet market is projected to reach RMB 1.15 trillion by 2028, the textile supply chain is adapting through ‘sense-and-respond’ manufacturing models. Exhibitors like Hyosung are introducing specialized Creora materials to provide lightweight warming and cooling solutions tailored for animal physiology. This technical convergence offers a significant margin-preservation opportunity for manufacturers seeking to diversify away from saturated traditional apparel segments into high-growth niche categories.
