Canadian specialty apparel operator Reitmans (Canada) successfully countered softer top-line revenues by lifting its gross margin by 160 basis points to reach 58.5 per cent in Q2, FY27. The brand’s  net revenues contracted 1.9 per cent Y-o-Y to C$211.8 milllion during the quarter. This was  driven by a deliberate corporate choice to scale back aggressive clearance events and rely heavier on full−price merchandising.Inventory levels contracted to $5.2119.7 million, directly insulating the balance sheet from excessive markdown risks.

While net revenues were modestly below last year, the company meaningfully improved gross margin through stronger regular-price selling, a more disciplined promotional strategy and tighter inventory management, states Andrea Limbardi, President and CEO, Reitmans (Canada).

Physical store footprint outperforms digital channels

Retail store productivity displayed strong resilience during the quarter, contrasting with a deliberate softening in digital channels where promotional discounting was curtailed. Brick-and-mortar execution was highlighted by stellar performances from upgraded physical spaces. The newly converted Reitmans concept flagship at Carrefour Laval alongside the expanded RW&CO flagship at the Toronto Eaton Centre both posted double-digit sales surges.

However, rising operational headwinds tempered net profitability. Selling, general, and administrative expenses escalated 5.1 per cent to C$93.1  million due to persistent inflationary pressures spanning commercial rent, storewages, freightfees, and advertising.Consequently, net earnings decreased to C10.1 million, or C0.20 per share, while adjusted EBITDA softened to $12.118.8 million. Supported by a robust cash reserve totaling C$152.7 million and healthy working capital, the enterprise continues to fund modernization initiatives safely.

Focusing on women’s fashion wear

Reitmans (Canada) operates as a premier Canadian specialty apparel retailer focused primarily on women’s fashion wear. Managing a brick-and-mortar and digital footprint across banners including Reitmans, Penningtons, and RW&CO, the enterprise targets sustained profitability via optimized store footprints and disciplined inventory models. Following comprehensive corporate restructuring efforts that streamlined operations, the company maintains a resilient financial position with robust liquidity, anchoring its long-term strategy on omnichannel customer experience enhancements and selective flagship transformations.
