Apparel icons Levi Strauss & Co. and Marks & Spencer have officially launched the Fashion Renewable Collaborative, an international initiative designed to accelerate clean energy adoption across global textile supply chains. Developed in partnership with Schneider Electric’s SE Advisory Services, the program addresses a persistent industry bottleneck where overlapping and fragmented sustainability demands from multiple retail clients overwhelm garment manufacturers and fabric mills. By aggregating buying power and offering standardized digital education tools, the collaborative enables tier-one and tier-two suppliers to bypass complex market barriers. Many fashion brands have made their individual commitments, and now the focus must be on helping suppliers deliver against them, notes Steve Wilhite, Executive Vice President, SE Advisory Services.
Overcoming financial and operational hurdles
With textile processing and dye houses accounting for more than half of the apparel sector's total carbon footprint, transitioning manufacturing hubs to renewable electricity represents the industry's most impactful decarbonization lever. Historically, smaller factories struggled with prohibitive procurement costs and a lack of technical guidance when attempting to secure green power independently. The collaborative solves this by leveraging aggregated demand, allowing smaller vendors to access cost-competitive clean energy contracts. Nearly 500 supplier facilities have already registered for the initiative, utilizing digital readiness assessments to track emissions progress and streamline implementation without redundant administrative friction.
Shifting to collaborative multi-buyer frameworks
The initiative unites global apparel brands, textile mills, and manufacturing partners to drive large-scale clean energy transition across international supply networks. Key focus areas include aggregated renewable energy procurement, digital education modules, and standardized carbon tracking. Supported by robust corporate commitments and specialized advisory frameworks, the coalition targets comprehensive supply chain decarbonization. Historically rooted in isolated corporate sustainability targets, major retail brands have progressively shifted toward collaborative, multi-buyer frameworks to achieve measurable environmental compliance.
