Gap has disclosed the list of factories from which it sources shoes and clothing. There are 885 such factories in roughly 30 countries, including China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Guatemala. Other firms that recently made similar disclosures include Marks & Spencer and Dutch clothing chain C&A. This is a significant step forward for transparency in supply chain management. This is a labor rights watchdog group that intervenes and mediates when laborers are being deprived of their rights as workers. The contract is the first of its kind in the US. Bangladesh is top denim exporter to EU

Bangladesh has overtaken China to become the largest denim supplier to the European Union. The country has also become the third largest denim supplier -- after China and Mexico -- to the US. This was possible because of the millions of dollars that local denim fabrics makers have invested to set up state-of-the-art facilities in their plants. "Q3-2016 saw a rise in global yarn production on a quarter-on- quarter basis. Thereby, output in Asia and South America rose. However, in Europe and the US, yarn production fell. On an annual basis, global yarn production in Q3-2016 increased versus Q3-2015. Global yarn stocks climbed in Q3-2016. Yarn stocks reduced in South America while in Asia, they increased. However, year-on-year, global yarn stocks declined. Yarn orders in Europe and in South America fell quarter-on-quarter. "The second largest garment exporter in the world, Bangladesh’s RMG export was $28.668 billion in 2016. Looking at its potential, the government has set a goal of reaching $50 billion in exports by 2021. Considering the current consumption, approx three billion metre of woven fabric is required for export per year. Local mills are capable of producing only around 45 million metres of fabric, which is around 14-15 per cent of the demand. India probes polyester yarn dumping by China

India has started a probe into Chinese dumping of polyester yarn following complaints from SRF and Reliance. These yarns are used for manufacturing tyre cord fabrics, seat belt webbing, slings, ropes, coated fabrics and conveyor belt fabrics. If it is established that dumping has caused material injury to domestic players, an anti- dumping duty may be imposed. Dumping affects gross margins. Anti-dumping duties are levied to provide a level playing field to local industry by guarding against cheap, below-cost imports.
